Kovar/F-15 Alloy isn't hardenable by warm treatment. The strengthened hardness is dependent upon RB 85 max, expanding up to RB 96 for half hard. In the strengthened condition, Kovar/F-15 Alloy is more hard to machine since it is delicate and sticky.
Tooling tends to furrow the material rather than neatly cutting into it, and does not effectively shape chips. Machining is simpler if the material is descaled first. Any surface scale oxide firmly holds fast to and enters the kovar surface to a more prominent degree than hardened steels.
